Completed in 1842, the Old Croton Aqueduct was one of America’s great engineering achievements. A gravity-fed tube carried water 41 miles from the Croton Dam in Westchester to a Distributing Reservoir at 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.
City of New York Parks & Recreation commissioned an interpretive signage system for the 15-mile portion of the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail, which runs through New York City. Laurel Marx is the graphic designer in collaboration with landscape architect Nancy Owens Studio, architect Kevin Bone, and FTL Design Engineering Studio. The 3-sided sign structures are 18” wide x 7.5’ tall, and are sited at significant locations in the Bronx and Manhattan.

City of New York Parks & Recreation commissioned an Interpretive signage program for the reconstruction of Collect Pond Park, at the Civic Center in Manhattan.
Laurel Marx designed the historical signage program in collaboration with landscape architect Nancy Owens Studio and historian Gerard Koeppel. Signs reflect the significant history of the Collect Pond, from the 1600s to the present day.
City of New York Parks & Recreation commissioned an interpretive signage system to describe the Wetlands in Van Cortlandt Park, Bronx, New York.
Signs highlight the characteristics and importance of wetlands, and identify the flora and fauna of the area. Panel backgrounds utilize photos of the actual site. Laurel Marx designed these signs in collaboration with landscape architect Nancy Owens Studio.
Digital presentation for Climate Change Week at Mercy Corps’ Action Center to End World Hunger, NYC. Maps, aerial photographs and text were projected on 5 screens, Illustrating potential impacts of storm surges and sea level rise in NYC. The goal was to raise awareness about climate change in an informative and visually compelling presentation from data that is typically expressed with numbers and graphs.
In collaboration with landscape architect Nancy Owens Studio, the project received a 2010 award from the NY Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects, in the category of Planning, Analysis, Research, Communications.
When Wynton Marsalis visited Havana in 2010 with members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, the experience inspired the formation of Horns to Havana, a project designed to facilitate cultural exchange with the music students of Cuba.
In 2011 Horns to Havana delivered 4 entire orchestras of instruments to 4 of Havana’s premier music conservatories, as well as providing a team of instrument repair technicians. Laurel Marx designed the marketing materials for this project.
The Blue Planet festival, a music and dance collaborative project held in Amsterdam, was conceived by composer Marion Von Tilzer and produced by the MuziCan Foundation.
The concept was inspired by Earth
s view from space, where the borders between countries disappear. Laurel Marx Design used a photo from NASA to illustrate commonalities between nations.
